After finishing a good book, get large paper and markers.
Write the title and author in big, decorated letters.
Star rating (1-5): "How many stars? Why?"
Favorite Character: draw them and explain why.
Best Scene: draw or describe the most exciting moment.
Recommendation: "Kids who like ____ would love this because ____."
Add borders, stickers, and extra artwork.
Display near the bookshelf. Start a wall of reviews.
Tips
Book reviews are literary analysis in kid-friendly packaging. Rating, identifying favorites, and recommending all require critical thinking about the text — the same skills tested on reading comprehension assessments.
The "why" questions are the most valuable parts. "Why 4 stars?" forces your child to articulate what they liked and what could be better. That's genuine literary criticism.
The recommendation section teaches perspective-taking: "Who else would like this?" requires thinking about other people's preferences, not just their own.
Display the posters and refer to them: "You gave 'Charlotte's Web' 5 stars but 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' only 3. What made Charlotte's Web better for you?" These conversations build comparative analysis.
Use book review posters to help other family members (or friends) pick their next read. It gives the reviews a real purpose.
Age Adaptation Tips
School-age kids can take more ownership. Let them lead the activity, experiment with variations, and explain what they learned.
