What You'll Need
A familiar bedtime book your toddler has heard many times
How to Play
Choose a well-loved book your toddler knows by heart.
Read it through once with your normal animated voice.
Close the book: "Great story! Let's tell it again together."
Ask: "Who was in the story?" Accept any character they name.
Guide the sequence: "What happened first?" Help with the beginning.
Continue: "Then what happened?" Flip to pages as visual prompts if needed.
Let toddler fill in what they can. Complete gaps naturally without correcting.
Finish together: "The end! You told that so well!"
Tips
Retelling a story is much harder than just listening to one. Your toddler has to remember characters, sequence events, and express it all in words. It's a cognitive workout — and one of the best predictors of later reading success.
Start with very simple books that have a clear beginning, middle, and end. "Goodnight Moon," "Brown Bear, Brown Bear," or "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" are perfect first retelling books.
Don't expect a perfect retelling. A 2-year-old might say "The bear... and the bunny... they eat." That's wonderful. They're extracting the key elements.
Make this a regular bedtime ritual: read, then retell. Over weeks, you'll watch your toddler's retelling get longer, more detailed, and more sequenced.
