Beatbox Basics Tutorial for Kids
Learn the three foundation sounds of beatboxing — the kick drum, hi-hat, and snare — then combine them into a basic beat. Your mouth is the instrument.
What You'll Need
Absolutely nothing — just your mouth and a willingness to make weird sounds
How to Play
Learn the kick drum: say a forceful, punchy "B" sound with your lips sealed tight, pushing a burst of air out. Not "buh" — just the percussive "B!" Practice it 10 times.
Learn the hi-hat: make a sharp "Ts" sound by pressing your tongue behind your top teeth and releasing a quick hiss. Crisp and short. 10 times.
Learn the snare: push air through pursed lips for a "Pf" or "Ksh" sound. Some people prefer pushing air between the side teeth for a wetter snare. Find what works for you.
Practice each sound individually until it sounds clean, punchy, and consistent.
Combine into the basic beat: B-Ts-Pf-Ts (kick-hat-snare-hat). Start painfully slow. Speed is earned.
Loop it continuously until it flows: B-Ts-Pf-Ts-B-Ts-Pf-Ts. No gaps between repetitions.
Add variations: try a double kick (B-B-Ts-Pf-Ts), add a bass drop (low "Booom"), or insert a breath-snare.
Tips
Beatboxing is a real, respected art form. Professional beatboxers perform at the highest levels worldwide. This isn't just silly sounds — it's genuine musicianship.
The most common mistake is trying to go fast too soon. Slow, clean sounds are more impressive than fast, messy ones.
Watch beginner beatbox tutorials on YouTube for visual demonstrations of mouth positions. Seeing someone's lips helps tremendously.
Practice in the car, in the shower, walking to school. Beatboxing requires no equipment, so you can practice literally anywhere.
Once the basic beat is solid, try beatboxing along to a song. Matching someone else's rhythm takes your skills to the next level.
