Back and Forth Cooing Conversation
Have a 'conversation' with baby by imitating their coos and waiting for a response — the earliest form of social turn-taking.
What You'll Need
No materials — just your voice and your attention
How to Play
Wait for a moment when baby is calm, alert, and making sounds on their own.
Get face-to-face with baby, about 10-12 inches away.
When baby makes a sound — a coo, gurgle, or squeal — imitate it right back to them.
Pause. Give baby 5-10 seconds to respond. This wait time is crucial.
When they coo again, respond with a similar sound and a big smile.
Keep the conversation going, matching baby's volume and energy level.
If baby goes quiet, try initiating with a new sound and see if they pick it up.
Why It Works
This is your baby's very first conversation. Long before words, babies learn the rhythm of social interaction — I talk, you talk, I talk, you talk. When you imitate their sounds and then wait, you're teaching them that communication is a two-way street. Research shows that babies whose parents engage in these vocal exchanges develop stronger language and social skills later on. The pausing is the magic — it gives baby the space to take their turn.
Tips
The waiting is the hardest part for us adults. Count to 10 in your head before you jump back in.
Match their sound first, then try adding a slight variation. Baby may try the new sound too.
This works beautifully during diaper changes, bath time, or while baby is in a bouncy seat.
Don't worry if baby doesn't respond every time. Some sessions will be chattier than others.
