What You'll Need
Infant cereal (rice or oat) for making edible paint
Food coloring (2-3 colors)
Soft fruits or vegetables — banana, avocado, or cooked sweet potato
Large paper (butcher paper or watercolor paper)
Tape
High chair with tray
How to Play
Prepare edible paint by mixing infant cereal with water until you get a thick, paint-like consistency. Add a drop of food coloring to each batch.
Cut soft fruits or veggies in half to create natural stamps. Bananas make circles, avocados make ovals, and sweet potatoes can be cut into various shapes.
Tape a large piece of paper to the high chair tray so it stays in place.
Dip a fruit half into the paint and gently press it onto the paper to demonstrate for your baby.
Place a fruit stamp into your baby's hand and help them press it onto the paper. Hand-over-hand is fine.
Let your baby explore freely — squishing, smearing, and mouthing are all part of the process.
Narrate everything. "You made a yellow circle! Look at that green smudge!" Your voice makes this a language activity too.
Tips
Everything here is taste-safe, so let your baby mouth the stamps and paint without worry.
This creates genuinely beautiful abstract art. Frame the dried print for a grandparent gift.
Use painter's tape to tape the paper down — it removes cleanly from the tray.
Do this activity right before a meal or bottle so baby is in the high chair mindset.
The stamps do not need to be perfect. A mushed banana that smears across the page makes just as meaningful a mark as a clean stamp.
