Baby Handprint Keepsake Art Project
Press your baby's hands and feet into non-toxic washable paint to capture tiny prints on paper — a meaningful art project that preserves this fleeting stage.
What You'll Need
- 1Non-toxic washable paint
- 2Cardstock or watercolor paper
- 3Paper plates for paint
- 4Baby wipes or warm damp cloth
What You'll Need
Non-toxic washable paint (look for baby-safe on the label)
Cardstock or watercolor paper — heavier paper prevents warping
Paper plates for spreading the paint
Baby wipes or a warm damp cloth for cleanup
How to Play
Lay out a large sheet of cardstock or watercolor paper on a flat, protected surface. Put an old towel underneath.
Pour a thin layer of non-toxic washable paint onto a paper plate. Spread it out evenly so it coats like an ink pad.
Gently press your baby's hand flat into the paint, fanning their fingers open. This takes a soft, patient touch.
Press the painted hand firmly onto the paper and hold for a count of three.
Lift the hand straight up to get a clean print. It is okay if the first one is messy — make several attempts.
Repeat with the other hand and both feet. Tiny footprints alongside handprints make a beautiful set.
Wash your baby's hands and feet immediately with a warm damp cloth.
Let the prints dry completely, then write the date and age on the paper.
Tips
The best time to do this is when your baby is calm but alert — right after a feeding often works well.
Have a partner help if possible. One person holds and soothes the baby while the other manages the paint and paper.
Babies naturally curl their fingers. Gently stroke the back of their hand to encourage them to open up.
Make prints every few months to see how much those little hands grow. Date each one.
If your baby hates the paint sensation, try a baby-safe ink pad instead — the experience is quicker and less messy.
