What You'll Need
A soft, baby-safe stuffed animal or doll (no small parts or button eyes)
How to Play
Sit comfortably with baby and bring out a beloved stuffed animal or doll.
Hold the stuffed animal and give it a big, exaggerated hug. Say "Huuug!" in a warm voice.
Offer the stuffed animal to baby and see if they squeeze it close.
Give baby a gentle kiss on the head and say "Kiss!" Then kiss the stuffed animal too.
Show baby how to pat the stuffed animal softly, guiding their hand: "Gentle, gentle."
Take turns — hug baby, then encourage them to hug the stuffed animal.
Finish with a big group cuddle — you, baby, and the stuffed animal all snuggled up.
Why It Works
Babies learn to express love by experiencing it and watching you model it. When you hug a stuffed animal and then hug baby, you're creating a connection between the feeling and the action. Over time, baby will start hugging, patting, and even kissing their toys (and you!) on their own. These are the earliest expressions of affection and empathy — baby is learning that physical touch communicates care.
Tips
Use the word "gentle" consistently. Baby will start to associate it with soft touches.
Don't worry if baby's hugs look more like squeezes or face-plants into the stuffed animal. That counts.
This is a great activity for teaching gentle touch with pets or younger siblings too.
Choose a stuffed animal that will become a regular "friend." Familiarity builds attachment.
Age Adaptation Tips
For babies, focus on sensory exploration. Let them watch, touch, and feel the materials. Always supervise closely and keep small items out of reach.
